What this means for your family

This facility's physical and occupational therapy departments are highly regarded and may be effective for short-term recovery. However, the facility has a consistent pattern of severe communication failures and understaffing; families should be prepared to be highly involved, visit frequently to ensure basic hygiene needs are met, and have a direct line of contact with a specific staff member rather than relying on the main phone line.

Albuquerque Heights Healthcare and Rehabilitation receives highly polarized reviews, with a clear divide between the quality of its rehabilitation therapy and the standard of daily nursing care. While many families and patients praise the physical and occupational therapy teams for their dedication and effectiveness, there are frequent, serious reports of neglect, poor communication, and substandard hygiene. Families should be aware that while some staff members are described as compassionate, the facility struggles with chronic understaffing, difficulty in reaching staff by phone, and inconsistent cleanliness.

Key Review Excerpts

The physical therapy staff was awesome some more interesting then others but awesome experience

Rehab patient · 2023★★★★★

My mom was sent to this facility straight from UNM hospital. This place always smelled of urine and everyday I would go visit my mom she was always wearing the clothes she had on the day before.

Long-term resident's family · 2024☆☆☆☆

The food looks like dog food, and I'm told it tastes the same. You would not allow anyone you cared about to eat it. No one answered the phone after an hour of calling.

This facility has concerning patterns with families filing numerous complaints that triggered 41 of 96 total deficiencies across recent surveys. The most recurring problems involve resident rights violations (including safety and dignity issues), care planning failures, and dining services deficiencies. While all violations show correction dates, the persistent complaints about safety hazards, quality of care standards, and even one abuse-related incident suggest ongoing operational challenges that families should carefully evaluate during visits.
