What this means for your family

The Heritage is an excellent choice for active seniors seeking a vibrant independent living community with high-end amenities. However, if you are considering the Somerfield assisted living or memory care units, proceed with caution. We recommend asking specific questions about current staff-to-resident ratios and response times for non-emergency requests during weekends and evenings.

The Heritage at Brentwood is widely praised by independent living residents for its beautiful campus, extensive activity calendar, and high-quality dining options. However, families of residents in the Somerfield assisted living and memory care sections report significant concerns regarding staffing levels, responsiveness to basic needs, and high turnover. While the community is viewed as a premium, "four-season" style retirement destination, the quality of care appears to decline for those requiring higher levels of daily assistance.

Questions for Your Tour

  • 1Given the beautiful park-like campus, what are some of the most popular outdoor activities or events that residents participate in together?
  • 2I noticed the facility has a high volume of daily activities; how do you ensure residents with different interests or mobility levels feel included in the community?
  • 3Since we are considering the memory care program, could you walk us through how your approach to specialized support differs from the rest of the facility?
  • 4I appreciate that you actively engage with online feedback; how does your leadership team use that resident and family input to improve daily operations?
  • 5With the current staffing environment, what specific steps are you taking to maintain consistency in care and ensure residents build lasting relationships with their caregivers?
  • 6In the event of a medical emergency, what is your protocol for coordinating care with local hospitals and keeping family members informed in real-time?

Key Review Excerpts

The entire value proposition of "graduating" to increased need on the same campus sounds good in theory. But in reality, they are extremely short staffed in Somerfield assisted living, pay low wages and therefore get low wage quality employees, are non-responsive to seniors living there.

Memory care family member · 2019☆☆☆☆

The independent living apartments are fine as well as the services offered but not extraordinary for the amount of money this costs. However, the reason we chose this place was for the continuum of care up to skilled nursing. We had to move my mom to the assisted living 10 days ago because of her dementia increasing. We were told she would have a phone landline... She has yet to get a working land line.

Memory care family member · 2025★★★★

The dinner menu, with a choice of 4 salads, 2 soups, 11 entrees, and 11 sides, changes every 2 weeks. The food is great.

Somerfield at the Heritage shows concerning patterns with recurring fire safety violations, including repeated issues with emergency exits and sprinkler system maintenance across multiple surveys from 2019 to 2022. The facility also had problems with medication management and resident privacy rights, though all deficiencies were reportedly corrected. The persistence of identical fire safety violations suggests potential ongoing safety management challenges that families should discuss during visits.
