What this means for your family

While many families report a warm, welcoming environment and excellent staff, there are critical, recurring reports of neglect and poor medical oversight for high-needs residents. We strongly recommend that you visit during off-hours and specifically ask about the ratio of licensed nursing staff to residents, as well as the facility's protocol for managing and reporting resident falls.

Brookdale Ann Arbor receives high praise from many families for its warm, welcoming environment and dedicated staff who are often described as knowledgeable and compassionate. However, there are serious, recurring reports of neglect, poor communication, and inadequate care for residents with dementia, particularly regarding fall management and hygiene. Families considering this facility should weigh the positive, home-like atmosphere against these significant safety and care concerns.

Key Review Excerpts

The staff here has exceeded every expectation. They greet her by name, speak to her with patience and kindness, and take the time to understand her unique personality and daily rhythms.

Memory care family member · 2025★★★★★

My grandmother has been neglected and her basic needs such as going to the bathroom ignored while living at this facility. She has fallen MULTIPLE times and has severely injured herself, left on the floor, alone for EXTENDED periods of time.

Long-term resident's family · 2023☆☆☆☆

My father has alzheimers. He's in Clare Bridge. It smells like pee... My father keeps falling and is sent to the ER since the 'nurse' they have on staff is just an LPN with a 2-year degree.

Failure to ensure resident protection/safety: 1) Resident A had an unapproved u-shaped bedside assist device strapped to the bedframe with mesh straps. 2) Resident B had 'Halo Rings' where the mattress shifted away from the device creating a gap, and the slats were large enough to cause potential entanglement/entrapment. 3) Resident B's service plan lacked sufficient information regarding the specific use, care, and maintenance of these devices.
