What this means for your family

This facility's rehabilitation therapy department is highly regarded and often produces positive outcomes for short-term patients. However, families must be prepared to visit frequently and advocate for their loved ones, as multiple reviewers report significant issues with call-bell response times, hygiene, and communication during off-hours.

The New Jewish Home, Manhattan, is a polarizing facility where experiences often depend on the specific unit and the level of family involvement. While many families praise the rehabilitation therapy team and specific staff members for their compassion and effectiveness, a significant number of reviewers report severe neglect, including slow response times to call bells, poor hygiene, and communication breakdowns. Families considering this facility should be prepared to be highly active advocates for their loved ones to ensure consistent care.

Key Review Excerpts

The physical and occupational therapists worked with my mother SIX days a week to improve her strength and get her back on her feet. The team (social work, nurses, PT, OT, and doctors) communicated with my mom and with us so we knew what was happening each step of the way.

Long-term resident's family · 2021★★★★

The care on the floor was disappointing. There were frequent staffing shortages, and some nurses were clearly overwhelmed, especially on weekends.

Rehab patient's family · 2025★★★☆☆

My mother had three falls in this nursing home. We felt that the rooms were not always kept in great condition. You go into the room it smells like urine you go into the bathroom, it smells like urine, I’d have to call housekeeping in order to tell them to come in and clean under the bed because there would be food and stains on the floor.

$134,514 in fines

This facility has concerning patterns of deficiencies totaling 44 violations across four surveys, with five triggered by family complaints including serious issues involving abuse protection and physical restraints. The most recurring problems involve safety hazards and accident prevention, medication management, and building safety systems like fire equipment and electrical systems. While all deficiencies show correction dates, the persistent recurrence of safety and medication issues across multiple years suggests ongoing operational challenges that warrant careful evaluation during any visit.
