What this means for your family

This facility has a highly regarded therapy and recreation department, making it a strong choice for short-term rehabilitation if you can provide daily oversight. However, the recurring reports of neglect, pest issues, and slow response times are serious red flags; we strongly recommend visiting unannounced and asking specifically about their current staffing ratios and sanitation protocols.

Chesapeake Health and Rehabilitation Center receives highly polarized reviews, with many families praising the dedicated therapy team and friendly front-desk staff, while others report severe concerns regarding neglect, hygiene, and staffing shortages. While some visitors describe a clean and welcoming environment, multiple reports of unaddressed call lights, poor food quality, and sanitary issues suggest significant inconsistency in the quality of care provided.

Questions for Your Tour

  • 1I noticed your team is very active in responding to online feedback; how do you use that resident and family input to improve the daily dining experience and ensure dietary restrictions are consistently met?
  • 2Given the facility's size of 180 residents, what specific protocols are in place to ensure that call lights are answered promptly and that staff are readily available to assist with personal hygiene needs?
  • 3We’ve heard great things about your physical and occupational therapy team, but could you walk us through the daily cleaning schedule to ensure rooms remain sanitary and odor-free?
  • 4What steps is the facility currently taking to maintain a pest-free environment for the residents?
  • 5Since your therapy programs are a highlight, could you tell us more about the recreational activities available for residents who aren't currently in active therapy sessions?
  • 6With the current staffing levels, how does your nursing team coordinate to ensure that medication management is handled accurately and on schedule for every resident?

Key Review Excerpts

My mom was in here for a month and I would not recommend this place to anyone for their loved ones. Her room had roach and mice traps sitting on the floor, we had to ask someone to clean her room multiple times, they were understaffed, didn’t have the proper equipment for her rehab, food was nasty.

Daughter of former resident · 2024☆☆☆☆

My husband was at Chesapeake Health & Rehabilitation Center for 2-1/2 months following an illness. He needed a lot of care and therapy, and he got it, from day one. The nurses, aides, and therapists were wonderful.

Wife of former resident · 2025★★★★★

CHRC needs improvement with their timeliness to address call bells and it did take a long time for assistance at times.

This facility has faced recurring safety and care issues, with families filing three formal complaints that triggered federal investigations. The most persistent problems involve accident prevention and safety supervision, pressure ulcer care, and medication management. While most deficiencies appear corrected after being cited, the pattern of repeat issues with safety supervision and the recent complaint-triggered citations in 2023-2024 suggest ongoing challenges that warrant careful consideration during your visit.
