What this means for your family

The Chesapeake is a beautiful facility well-suited for independent living, but it struggles significantly with nursing responsiveness and administrative communication for those requiring higher levels of care. If you are considering this facility for a loved one who needs assistance, be sure to ask for specific protocols regarding call-button response times and how they handle the transition from independent to assisted living.

The Chesapeake is highly regarded for independent living, featuring an updated, attractive facility and a professional atmosphere. However, families of residents requiring higher levels of care report significant concerns regarding nursing responsiveness, staffing levels, and a perceived lack of transparency when residents transition from independent to assisted or memory care.

Questions for Your Tour

  • 1Given that you have a 5-star staffing rating from CMS, how do you ensure that staff are consistently available to respond to call buttons and medication requests in a timely manner?
  • 2I noticed some feedback regarding communication with families; what is your standard process for keeping us updated on our loved one's care and any changes in their health?
  • 3Since the facility is well-regarded for its independent living lifestyle, how do you integrate those same high standards of engagement and activity into the daily life of residents in the nursing care wing?
  • 4With your proximity to medical services, what does your protocol look like when a resident requires an urgent medical intervention or a sudden change in their care plan?
  • 5I see that you actively engage with online feedback; how does that resident and family input help you shape or improve the quality of care provided here?
  • 6Could you walk me through how your team manages medication administration to ensure accuracy and consistency for residents with complex health needs?

Key Review Excerpts

The Chesapeake is best described as a lifestyle option for retired adults who are highly functional and very capable of independent living.

Memory care family member · 2025★★☆☆☆

The nurses do the bare minimum. They will literally dehydrate your loved ones intentionally to minimize changing diapers. This establishment is very expensive but the value for the money is atrocious.

Family member · 2025☆☆☆☆

Generally the staff is super friendly BUT the nurses are very slow to respond to the call button. I am currently waiting for medicine for my father that he first rang the bell for almost two hours ago.

Long-term resident's family · 2022★★☆☆☆

Inspection History

Medicare Inspection History

3-year lookback · Medicare 2026

12deficiencies
Near state avg (14.5)

The Chesapeake shows a concerning pattern with 30 deficiencies across three surveys, primarily in resident rights, emergency preparedness, and food safety. Issues with resident transfer notifications and emergency planning have persisted across multiple inspections from 2018-2022. While all deficiencies show correction dates, the recurring problems in key areas like resident protections and emergency readiness suggest ongoing operational challenges that families should carefully consider.
