What this means for your family

While Bishop Spencer Place is highly regarded for its independent living amenities, the skilled nursing and rehab units have received consistent, serious reports of neglect and understaffing. If you are considering this facility for a loved one needing medical care, we strongly advise you to visit frequently, monitor their hygiene and medication schedule personally, and be prepared to act as a primary advocate.

Bishop Spencer Place presents a significant divide between its highly-regarded independent living community and its struggling skilled nursing and rehab units. While independent living residents praise the amenities and social atmosphere, families of rehab and nursing patients frequently report severe neglect, including unaddressed hygiene needs, delayed call-light responses, and poor communication from medical staff. Prospective families should be aware that the facility's reputation for long-term care is marred by consistent reports of understaffing and inadequate clinical oversight.

Key Review Excerpts

The assisted living section is beautiful and the private-pay residents appear to receive good care, but for residents in the nursing home part it's a living nightmare. They often lie soaked in their own urine for an hour or more after pressing the button to call the nurse.

Nursing home family member · 2023☆☆☆☆

Night shift is disgraceful. Need meds? Plan on waiting until the next day. Need a doctor? Only get sick on the 2 days a week they see patients. Filing complaints with the director of nursing does nothing.

Skilled nursing family member · 2024★★☆☆☆

My father was here for rehab. It’s an awful place. He got sepsis here from an open wound under his ankle boot he had for an ankle fracture that was never checked. I had him transferred to the hospital, but it was too late and he died.
