Key Review Excerpts

My sister has been a resident at Simancas for 8 months. I live across the country but heard that she was getting excellent care from several of her friends. When I got to visit her, I saw for myself that she was in good hands. It's family owned, caring and they have great food too. I can fly home knowing that she's in excellent hands.

The following deficiencies were found during the on-site compliance inspection conducted on November 07, 2023:

If an assisted living facility provides medication administration, a manager shall ensure that:R9-10-816.B.3.aCorrected Nov 29, 2023

Based on record review, document review and interview, the manager failed to ensure medication administered to a resident is administered by an individual under direction of a medical practitioner for two of two residents sampled. Findings include: 1. A review of R1's and R2's medical record revealed a current service plan which indicated R1 and R2 received medication administration. R1's and R2's medical record reveled a medication administration record which indicated R1 and R2 were being administered medication as prescribed. However, R1's and R2's MAR indicated E1 had administered medication on several days in September and October 2023. Further review of R1's and R2's medical record revealed evidence of documentation indicating E1 was authorized to administer medication under the direction of the medical practitioner was unavailable for review. 2. A review of E1's personal file revealed a document used for obtaining E1's authorization for administration of medication under the direction of a medical provider, however the document was not signed by a medical provider. 3. A review of facility policy and procedures, updated October 18, 2023, revealed a policy regarding medication administration which stated: "The manager will...Obtain authorization from a medical practitioner...that allows qualified caregivers...to provide medication administration and treatments ordered by the resident's medical practitioner..." 4. In an interview E1 acknowledged R1 and R2 were receiving medication as ordered, however authorization for E1 to administer medication had not been obtained from R1's or R2's medical provider.
